People have been asking me for years what my definition of the term “indie rock” is, and time and time again I’ve done little else than hand them a copy of Built to Spill’s 1997 masterstroke Perfect From Now On . For a band that pays the rent with checks that come from the same place that bankrolls Cher’s plastic surgeries and Billy Joe Armstrong’s makeup tab at Aveda, it’s surprising how unassuming and pedestrian a band that writes such anthemic and instantly classic guitar rock actually looks
