4 Stars Pretty good starter book
Ok… I’ll admit that I haven’t spent oodles of time with this book, so I’m not sure how helpful others will view this review. I bought this book, obviously, to teach myself the harmonica, and so far, I’m happy with the results. It introduces you to music theory, how to read tablature, etc. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the time to heavily invest in the harmonica; however, my wife’s started recognizing little riffs the book has introduced me to, and the cd sounds promising. It makes you want to play better with the band that’s in the background, and Gindick has lots of enthusiasm for playing.
Other reviewers may not like the whole ‘caveman’ motif, but it’s not that bad. I’m looking forward to having some more time soon to practice more.
5 Stars Simply awesome. Only a git or a prig would find it irritating.
First of all, I can’t imagine the sort of person who would get wound up by the story and cartoons in the book. I found them pleasant and amusing, as well as usefully instructive. It was very refreshing to get a different formula from other music tutor-books. Gindick is clearly a nice man with a good sense of humor, and also a great teacher. I can only imagine what sort of person would actually find the cartoons and story offensive, but I imagine thye are the sort of villain or blackguard who hates children and thinks fairy-tales are stupid. This book rules. (They are probably also the sort of people who didn’t like the Lord of the Rings movies, the sure sign of a scoundrel).
I have been busting my chops with Yerxa’s Harmonica for Dummies and getting nowhere for the past month or so. I picked up this book today an within ten minutes of listening to the CD I was having a blast and had learnt more practical music theory too. Get this book right now, don’t get any other one first. I wish I had.
1 Star REALLY disappointed
After reading some of the prior reviews of this book, I ordered it. Boy was I disappointed. First off, the cave man characters WERE just as obnoxious as everyone else mentioned in their reviews. Don’t know what author was thinking to include that. Wasn’t cute, or funny. Just dumb. Second, I found his diagrams and tabs confusing and frustratng to try to figure out. (I finally gave up and started reading the other harmonica book that I ordered at the same time as this one.It is MUCH better.)
I haven’t played the CD that came wih this book yet, maybe that will turn out to be the one good thing about ordering this book and save me from thinking that I wasted my money.
4 Stars music book
This book along with the Hohner harmonica set I bought
made a really good gift for my 15 yr old grandson.
5 Stars A Gindick classic
This is classic Jon Gindick - Jon tells you entertaining stories while he gets you playing - meanwhile hipping you to harmonica lingo and musical situations - and to the coolness of the harmonica - in the process. Highly recommended.

Wish You Were Here
A snarky, fact-filled look at the people and places that made the indie/punk scene what it is today
The American underground music scene is exploding everywhere—not just in New York City and L.A. (although we’ve got those cities covered too!):
In Washington, D.C. . . . Ian MacKaye and Fugazi inspired the straightedge culture, which had kids everywhere drawing black X’s on their hands in magic marker.
In Omaha, Nebraska . . . A young Conor Oberst, aka Bright Eyes, started writing and performing gut-wrenching love songs at the tender age of thirteen.
On Long Island, New York . . . Taking Back Sunday and Brand New battled for emo supremacy and the fragile hearts of a million teenage girls.
From the coauthor of the cult-worthy Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide to Emo Culture comes Wish You Were Here—a combination travel guide and tortured history covering everything from what constitutes proper rock critic etiquette in Minneapolis to why pop-punk bands in Chicago have so much suburban angst, to how freegans in the Bay Area can feed themselves on a budget that would make frugal Rachael Ray’s face blush.
